3 Best Ways to Organize Bathroom Items

By Danielle Wirsansky on November 11, 2017

Most of us have an idea of what our dream bathroom would consist of. Clean, bright tiles. A spacious counter and vanity. A large Jacuzzi tub with jets. A big, airy window that lets in lots of natural light. A towel warmer rack. A fancy, high powered toilet with a seat warmer.

Whatever tickles your fancy, you sadly probably cannot have that while you are in college. College is a time for scrimping and saving, sharing rooms with others, and if not sharing rooms, then at least bathrooms. There is not a lot of space when you are in college, because more space requires more money, and money is one thing you generally do not have as a student.

So you are stuck with a small, ordinary bathroom. There are still ways to improve it and utilize the small space that you have. Most of this stems from organizing your bathroom items in smart ways. Read on to learn how to salvage your bathroom dreams and the best way to organize your bathroom items!

Reclaim the space over your toilet

A lot of people try to keep the lid to the toilet tank clear for many reasons. They do not want anything to be accidentally knocked into the toilet, they do not want to have to move things off it when they need to peer into the tank, or they simply do not like the clutter.

However, there is so much space above the toilet tank that usually gets overlooked. Reclaim that space by adding shelves or an organizer above it. Not only will it help you to keep everything more organized and fit more bathroom items inside your actual bathroom, it can be a reflection of your own style. It can help you really make the bathroom your bathroom by reflecting your individual style.

You can get a metallic shelf that stands on the tank lid or hang wooden shelves from the wall. A cute idea was to take wicker baskets, without handles, and stick them to the wall, bottom flush against the wall. Then you can use them as little cube organizers for your belongings. Whatever your style is, this is a great way to organize your stuff and express it.

Make the most of sink cupboard space

Bathroom cupboards are convenient, but it can often be hard to effectively use all the space the cupboard can provide. This is because the cupboards are often much taller than they are wide, You can fill up the bottom of the cupboard, but after that, there is no more room despite the feet of room that is empty above your items. Make the most of your sink cupboard space by adding shelves or drawer organizers. Do not let there be wasted empty space!

Drawers or shelves are also a great idea because they can help you to organize your bathroom items more effectively. Medicines go in one drawer, cosmetics another. College students lead busy lives and often just putting things in your sink cupboard can lead to unnecessary messes. If you are in a rush, you might just toss something back in, disorganizing the whole cupboard or knocking things over and making a mess for example.

Drawers help you to compartmentalize and make things easier. However your mind works and what your style reflects, get something to fill up that space and effectively utilize it too.

Purge unnecessary items

Another really great way to organize your bathroom to make more room for you and whatever your style demands of you is to go through and purge your unnecessary items. Do you really need that body glitter that you wore in middle school that somehow never gets thrown out? Do you really need that many half-finished bottles of shampoo and conditioner that you never remember to use? Do you really need 30 different eyeshadow palettes, or will the main five that you actually use on a regular basis suffice?

What about medicines? Many students make up their own first aid kits but then sort of forget about them. Go through your first aid kit and get rid of medicines that have expired throughout your years at college. Maybe that Pepto-Bismol expired last fall. Maybe the gummy vitamins you used to take have by now congealed into one giant, cylinder-shaped gummy. Maybe one of your emergency asthma inhalers only has two puffs left in it, so you can use it up and only have one inhaler instead of two. Why keep stuff you can no longer use?

If you are not using it, it is simply taking up space. Space is a precious commodity and not one you should waste.
